The freedom of a sensitive practice allowing oneself to be inspired and carried by material and emotion is fundamental to Virginie Bécourt’s work. This close, physical engagement with matter becomes a moment of intimacy, an organic encounter. Nature is an essential resource for her, enabling her to embrace her sensitivity. Her universe continually returns to the living world, to plant life, without ever seeking to imitate it. Folds and stitches form a simple process which, when combined with the material, creates a richer and more complex visual language. Born from a constraint I imposed upon myself: to use old or secondhand raw materials and create with the available quantity.
The sculpture emerged from a tumult of emotions revealed in the frayed folds.
