Erna Anema
The Rietveld and Rijksakademie alumna does not so much paint the landscape itself as the effect it has on her. The high mountains are a subject particularly suited to the painterly questions she poses to herself. Her breathing is literally reflected in her brushstrokes, as high up in the thin air: ‘Breathe in and breathe out.’
In my paintings I investigate boundaries. Where colors differ from one another more than they correspond, a boundary comes into being. In my painterly handwriting, the decisions I made to render my subject visible can be read. These decisions therefore form an important visual component of my work
