curriculum vitae

Stefan Gross, was born in Bendorf, in Germany, in 1964.
He apprenticed in a glass painting business. There, in addition to restoration, he also carried out commissions from artists. This was his first contact with visual artists. After completing the advanced master’s training, he decided to make art himself. He put together a portfolio of his own free works and was then accepted to the then newly founded HBK saar in Saarbrücken. He studied painting and.graduated in 1997 as a master student with Prof. Bodo Baumgarten. Then het took a big step into the unknown, the Netherlands, with a scholarship from the German government (DAAD).
After a few guest studios in Rotterdam, he made his permanent studio in the studio community Kunst en Complex in the Rotterdam harbour, where he still works today. In 2010 he makes his first experiments with thermoplastic plastics. He sets himself the challenge to create a material that can be manipulated by hand and painted, based on an industrial material. A material with unlimited possibilities for him.Â
But also a controversial, time-defining material of the petroleum age, which could not depict the excesses of our time more aptly.
He believes to have found the appropriate visual language in the Baroque and even more so in the Rococo.Â
Stefan Gross calls his works for this reason works of the ‘SciFi Rococo’.Â
A future version of the Rococo, which hopefully does not end up pointing to the limits of our civilization.
