Thera Hillenaar
Thera Hillenaar ( 1970) is a Dutch artist, costume designer, and scenographer working between performance and sculpture. Trained in fashion, she uses exaggeration and restriction as creative tools, balancing constraint with improvisation to create refined, striking forms.
Her work draws on toys, childhood memories, and bright colours, contrasted with the raw, tactile qualities of leather, creating a tension between innocence and strength. Alongside totemic sculptures, her Geometric Morfiques function as delicate altars, preserving geometric symbols and holding space for reflection on deeper meanings of life.

Thera Hillenaar transforms textiles and reclaimed materials into sculptural, story-driven artworks that explore form, memory, and the expressive boundary between costume, body, and abstraction.

Leather wall sculpture,
This work by Thera Hillenaar presents a compact, layered textile sculpture in which organic forms unfold like a cross-section of a body or landscape, constructed from carefully folded and stacked materials in contrasting colors.
The combination of soft fabrics, clean lines, and vivid tones such as red, blue, and pink evokes associations with anatomy and movement, while the cord closure and wearable form suggest clothing or an object that exists close to the body.
The piece balances between sculpture and accessory, exploring how interior and exterior, protection and vulnerability, come together both visually and tactically.€ 550

Created during an artist residency in Vélez-Blanco, Spain, this work emerged from a period of living off-grid in nature in early spring. Immersed in the landscape, I became attuned to its rhythms, its quiet transformations, and a sense of nature in its pure, undisturbed state.
