Sarah van Rossem
Sarah van Rossem’s work originates in forests and roadsides, where she closely observes natural processes and the interplay of light and color. During her walks, she collects plants, leaves, and grasses, which she transforms in her studio into often large-scale graphic works. With great patience, she carefully mixes the colors she observes outdoors, using lightfast etching inks to achieve nuanced, lasting tones.
Using an etching press, she prints these elements in multiple layers onto heavy paper, preserving their veins and textures. Her intuitive and exploratory approach results in layered compositions with natural tones that evoke not only a visual but also a sensory experience, suggesting the presence of nature itself.

Bij de braam was created in late autumn. This diptych is inspired by the vibrant colors of the bramble bush that emerge at the end of the season. Around November, the forest gradually becomes more open, allowing the soft morning light to filter through. This gentle light contrasts beautifully with the warm colors in the artwork. The diptych is framed together in a single aluminium frame with a wood veneer layer, complementing its natural aesthetic.

Berm in Bloei was created in spring. This diptych is inspired by the plants that grow along roadsides, whose abundant presence becomes especially striking in springtime. Their ability to thrive together and flourish within such a short growing season was the inspiration behind this work. This diptych is framed in two identical aluminium frames with a wood veneer layer, complementing its natural aesthetic.

Midwinter Forest depicts winter. In the season when the days grow shorter and colours seem to ebb away, it is the plants that still show colour that stand out against the quiet, subdued background.
