Sander Martijn Jonker (1977) is a Dutch Art and Photography graduate who lives and works near Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Having also graduated from wood and furniture College, he combines a photographer’s eye with builders hands.

His work leans on craftsmanship and building, where he tends to rely on traditional techniques for new purposes. His wall sculptures, mainly consisting of natural fiber reinforced plaster and wood, are made entirely by hand. The making process is characterized by obsessive diligence and control, and an everlasting struggle with the material. Although the labor is manually and mentally taxing, the eventual objects tend to have an air of silence and serenity, formed by the thorough elimination of all unnecessary and unwanted elements in the process.

This coexistence of order and chaos and the tension between them, play a big role in his work. He often utilizes elements of symmetry, balance and repetition alongside more chaotic, dynamic and spontaneous elements. These eventually give shape to underlying sentiments that might be well hidden at first glance, but may appeal to anyone who can relate to a struggle with chaos and control.
