Samuel Dejong
Samuel Dejong (born Johannes Samuel de Jong in 1971 in De Bilt, the Netherlands) is a self-taught artist living and working in Amsterdam. Trained in medicine and surgery, he earned a PhD in pathology and worked in surgical oncology and fluorescent optical imaging before dedicating himself fully to art in 2019.
His scientific background shapes an experimental practice exploring nature, cosmology, spirituality, and the mysteries of space-time. Moving from precise natural forms in Anatomia and his butterfly works to the abstraction of Space and Time, Singularity, and Interstellar, Dejong investigates transformation, solitude, melancholy, hope, and eternity.

In the Interstellar series, I draw on the imagery of distant galaxies: swirling dust clouds, glowing nebulae, and dense clusters of stars. I build the surfaces with aggregates mixed into binders to create a rough, grainy texture, then layer matte paint to give the works depth. Small points of light sit in that darkness like stars in an open sky. By combining simple, physical materials with careful colour choices, each piece becomes a way to look outward, into something much larger than us.

Calling the series Nirvana is a reminder to myself. Not a promise of perfection or an escape from reality, but a direction. The work reflects a state of calm to return to, even when the world keeps pulling in the opposite direction.

Nirvana, in a spiritual sense, is a state of inner freedom: the quieting of craving, fear, and suffering. In Buddhism, it is not a heaven or destination, but a shift in being, away from attachment and reactivity, toward clarity and peace.
This title reflects my final series: a refusal to live only within the noise of the present. In a world marked by war, conflict, uncertainty, and tension, I do not claim that painting can fix everything. But I can choose what I add to the world.
So I chose light. The soft, pastel colours are not a denial of darkness, but my response to it—a calm space that does not fight back. For me, Nirvana is a reset, a breath, and a direction: a reminder not to let ugliness take everything from me. Let there be light.

Singularity delves into the moment of cosmic collapse, when mass compresses to an infinite density—akin to the core of a black hole. Layered textures concentrate toward the center of each composition, while color gradients and void-like blacks intensify this sense of convergence. The interplay of thick aggregates in the matrix and strategic pigment application mirrors the immense force and mystery at the universe’s most extreme boundary.
