Laurens Mostert (1981, The Hague, The Netherlands) studied Architectural Engineering for a few years but switched to Graphic and Typographic Design at the KABK. He came to realize that Dutch ZERO had to be his artistic starting point but tried to develop a more distinct signature from the start. Since early 2020 that has resulted in other series. One of these series is called lumina and has a technique and style that are very recognizable. Lumina is Latin for lights or cavities. In creating these works he firstly applies a grid on a panel that is painted matt black. After that the grid (cavities) is filled under a magnifying glass using a dip pen, with gold-inks (lights) he developed. Then a process of destruction/creation takes place until it’s done. The creative process is intuitive as well as analytical and concentration, control and contrast are connected to his work. His aspiration is to render the great in a subtle way and he wants the pieces to be timeless. artist statement
