The still lifes of Jan Luijk feature utilitarian objects with a lifetime behind them. It is the wear and tear showing years of use that ‘softens’ their looks. Often, Jan puts objects with similar uses and age together. But objects from various style periods may also join each other in a strong ensemble of colour and shapes. This is a recurring theme throughout his work. He only uses natural light, creating a somewhat subdued effect. Also because of the carefully selected colours and compositions, his work may resemble a painting. 

Jan continuously collects vintage items for his photos. Objects may find themselves on the shelves for years, until that moment when he finds something just right for a new composition. These compositions are surprising, which makes his work decidedly contemporary. His place of work is a spacious, inspiring 16^th century townhouse in Veere, where the atmosphere seamlessly matches his photography. 

Jan has exhibited his work at various galleries and companies, such as Piet Boon in Oostzaan, Galerie Doen in Rotterdam, Atelier Jongerius in Ulvenhout, Boffi in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and the KunstRAI in Amsterdam. He will also exhibit work at his home, open to viewing during the Kunstroute Veere.
