Ivi van Keulen
Ivi van Keulen (1987) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work moves between art, design, and storytelling. Raised by an engineer mother and a nationally celebrated marksman father, she inherited a deep attention to detail, quiet discipline, and a fascination for how things come together. Since founding Studio Van Keulen in 2011, she has explored themes of stillness, emotion, and human connection through ceramics, drawing, installations, and performative gestures. Her practice embraces circularity, unexpected collaborations, and the poetic beauty of fragments. Transforming the broken, the overlooked, and the discarded into works that resonate with meaning and presence.

A collection of Delft Blue vases with chips and cracks became one new piece. I decided to repair these vases by destroying them. By breaking them and reforming them, as a new work, I give it value again in the modern world.

Reinterpretation Across Cultures and Generations.
Chinoiserie emerged from fascination rather than accuracy. When Chinese porcelain reached Europe, its technical perfection and unfamiliar imagery sparked admiration and imitation. European makers reinterpreted what they saw, blending Chinese motifs with local traditions such as Delft Blue.
Finally becoming mass made in China again, only now as quick and cheap consumer goods.
These vases continue that lineage of translation. Made through reuse and reinterpretation, they acknowledge the layered histories embedded in decorative objects: trade routes, cultural projection, craftsmanship, and shifting values. Imperfections are not hidden but embraced, marking each piece as part of a living, evolving tradition.

Coral Vase – Reimagining Delft Blue.
The Coral Vases grow from a story that began over a decade ago, when I worked for Marcel Wanders and first immersed myself in the world of Delft Blue, patterns and mosaics. That experience sharpened my eye for detail and sparked a fascination with transforming heritage into something new.
Using rejected ceramic pieces as a foundation, each fragment carries its own history, and by reshaping and rebuilding them, new forms emerge. Coral-like vessels that feel alive, organic, and quietly radiant.
What once was discarded becomes part of a contemporary narrative. These vases celebrate craft, circularity, and the poetic beauty of giving old materials a new voice.

For this series, I collaborate with Royal Delft, using their rejected ceramic pieces as a foundation. Each fragment carries its own history, and by reshaping and rebuilding them, new forms emerge. Coral-like vessels that feel alive, organic, and quietly radiant.
