Blanca van Haaren
Blanca began working with metal during her studies in product design, where the material was mainly used as a structural element: strong, functional, and often hidden beneath a finishing layer. In her autonomous work, she removes metal from this supporting role and places it at the centre. Transforming its hard, industrial strength into an unexpectedly soft and dynamic image. Because she cannot work with layers on top of each other – as with paint, she searches for rhythm and repetition to create depth and movement. The image emerges from grinding marks, sometimes minimal and quiet, sometimes intense and layered. Her process constantly moves between control and letting go. Within that tension, she finds her visual language, reflecting everyday life where both forces must continually be balanced.

Her work explores the softer side of metal, by creating movement and softness by grinder-drawn or welded lines.

This artwork captures movement and the attempt to hold it still. The flowing forms suggest something alive and constantly moving, while the process of fixing them in place creates a contrast between movement and stillness. The use of rust reinforces this idea, as something that naturally develops and changes over time is also captured and preserved. The work explores the tension between continuous movement and the desire to hold onto a single moment.

This two-part artwork captures falling leaves. Through a combination of grinding techniques and layered three-dimensional metal elements, the leaves emerge from the surface of the work, creating depth while they are drifting beyond the frame itself. Formed entirely in metal, the textured grinding patterns give each leaf a dynamic and organic character. The heat created during the grinding process produces natural bronze and blue tones across the surface, reflecting the wide variety of colours found in changing leaves.

This artwork captures the speed of a falcon in flight. Created through grinding techniques in metal, the extended wings and streamlined composition reflect the falcon’s agility and precision, while the raw metallic surface adds a sense of strength. Set against the dark background, the composition expresses the freedom and power that define the falcon in motion.

Dual Echo is a steel artwork shaped with an angle grinder, in which raw material is transformed into delicate forms. The piece explores the contrast between strength and softness, carving movement from solid steel. Set against a deep black background, the polished surfaces create a subtle dialogue between shadow and reflection.

Within the Tide presents a steel surface marked by repeated grinding patterns that reference the movement of water. Two swimmers are integrated into the composition, creating a contrast between the solid, industrial material and the suggestion of fluid movement. The work explores the tension between structure and flow through rhythm and repetition.

Serpentine explores the tension between organic growth and industrial processes. The steel is welded from the back side of the material. Therefore, rather than building the image directly onto the surface, the work emerges indirectly. This process creates almost cellular forms that appear to spread across the steel like living structures.
The title refers both to the serpentine, winding lines within the composition and to the unpredictable nature of the material itself. Although formed through industrial techniques, the work evokes organic transformations. The surface captures a moment within that transformation, where movement and material tension are held still.

Flamenco
H 60 x W 50 x D 2,2 cmÂ
Metal Art
This artwork showcases flowing steel forms that evoke the movement of a flamenco dancing figure. The textured surface creates a sense of rhythm and expansion against the dark, black background. It was inspired by the expressive motion and, at the same time, the elegance of flamenco, capturing a moment of strength and fluidity in metal, just as the material itself can also take on a form of elegance and softness.

Desire
H 21 x W 31 x D 2,5 cm
Metal Art
This artwork presents two figures moving toward one another, yet just missing each other. Their near connection reflects the feeling of desire: longing for something that seems within reach, but at the same time remains out of reach. Desire exists in that brief moment of longing, because once what is desired is attained, the feeling itself disappears. This subtle emotion, so difficult to describe in words, is translated into a visual form through this artwork. The work captures the tension between reaching, longing, and missing.
