Batist Vermeulen

The ‘Condition Humaine’ and ‘mismatch are central themes in his works. With curiosity as a force, he looks at himself as a human being with doubts, fears, etc. and tries to project what he sees and feels on the world to see if there’s solution in some kind of response. Acknowledging his doubts and uncertain search offers a grip and drive. Even if this search doesn’t lead to direct responses or solutions, in the process there’s realness and beauty to be found.
Look close enough and you will see the sun shining through the cracks.

“My art is not just a visually pleasing depiction of a concept, rather a journey, a reflection of the search for meaning and beauty in unexpected places.”

Little New Old Boots

H 12 x W 5 x D 5 cm
Mineral Resin

The little boots recall the remnants of Greek and Roman sculpture, where time has erased the body and only traces remain. By elevating an everyday item into the language of classical sculpture, the work collapses centuries of cultural history into a single form.

The jerrycan becomes a contemporary relic. A symbol of our dependence on resources; water, fuel, energy, and the increasingly fragile systems that govern their distribution. What was once a purely utilitarian object is transformed into a monument to scarcity and value.

The wedges, a seemingly worthless waste material, are reclaimed as essential elements of a new creation. The very act of choosing these pieces reflects on my interest in finding beauty and meaning in what others would deem insignificant.

The work places hand grenades inside a supermarket net, borrowing the visual language of retail to reflect on the economic realities of conflict. By treating weapons as products sold by quantity, Vermeulen shifts attention from warfare itself to the systems of trade, value, and profit that sustain it.
