As a visual artist, Ad Groot is in a sense indebted to the painting school named after his native village, Bergen, North Holland. At a young age, he received instruction from the painter Jaap Min. During his stay in Paris, from 1985 to 2010, his—in this case, the quintessentially metropolitan—living environment was completely displaced. The development of his work during that period was a process of further internalization, resulting in the works we know today.
