Noah Arends’ (1996, Amstelveen) work stems from a fascination for what is considered tasteful and what is considered bad taste. Her works balance between stylish monumental objects and somewhat playful characteristic images. The work may seem flat at first glance, but who looks closely will be surprised: the work is layered where it’s not expected and flat where it appears to have depth. Images of fashion photography surround us everywhere in daily life. Arends’ work seeks interaction with these images, stripping them of commercial character, but retaining their typical aesthetic elements. The primary material is transformed into original, autonomous works. From collected fashion photographs, Arends makes compositions, which are subsequently scanned, digitally edited, and printed on textiles. Finally, the naturally limp and shapeless prints are given (three-dimensional) form, by being stretched over a frame or wooden sculpture. In this process, fashion images are taken on a journey through different materials: pictures of fabric, printed on glossy magazine-paper, return to their original material: textile.
