From a strong belief that discarded materials still hold value, Florine Verhallen (1992) transforms abandoned denim into tactile works that move between softness and structure, presence and memory. Through slow and attentive processes of deconstruction, folding and filling, the material is released from its original function and reconfigured as part of an ongoing exploration of how discarded matter can be rebuilt. Rather than imposing meaning, Florine’s practice opens up space for reflection. What was once functional, begins to exist differently: as surface, volume and quiet presence. In this shift, questions of value, care and attention begin to emerge. The familiar material becomes unfamiliar again, inviting a slower way of looking.
